Tip of the Month

Security Risks

If you use a computer at a large office or even if you just use a desktop or laptop at home, you need to be concerned about security.  First thing to remember – don’t fall for the emails where they claim to be your bank or your credit card company.  Do not believe that someone has sent you an e-card from Hallmark or some other greeting card site.  All of these are schemes to either get your personal information or to plant malicious software on your computer. A good anti-virus program will help, but you also need a good firewall and spyware program to guard your data. But even with all of these, there is no substitute for common sense and caution.

And do not click on any popup that tells you your computer may be infected and click here to buy the software you need to clean it. That just gets your credit card # and loads more nasty software on your computer! If you see this type warning, do not click on it and call a professional computer person to clean your computer for you.

Next, use something more complicated than a pet’s name or a child’s name for your password. With a little social espionage someone can get this info and they try to crack into your computer.  Use a combination of numbers and letters that would be extremely unlikely for someone to guess.

As always, if you have questions or need help, Contact me for more information.

Warning of the Month

Lately I have been seeing a new virus/spyware invasion call XP Antivirus 08. It sneaks onto your PC via an email attachment and then pops up a message saying that your PC is infected and directing you to click a button to clean up your PC. It will even pop up a message telling you that your PC has 60+ viruses and to click to scan & clean. This just loads more nasty software on your PC. And if you buy their package they will bill your credit card for more than the stated price. Be very careful, if you see anything like this, contact me. Do not click on anything.

Spotlight of the month

EZ Hurricane Protection is based in Sarasota Florida and sells and installs a very good method of protecting your home from hurricane damage. The EZ Screen product is easier to install, remove and store than plywood, corrugated panels, etc. It will even allow light through so you are not trapped in a dungeon during a storm. Visit their site to see examples of their installations, learn about the products and the warranty that they offer.
