The Birth and Death of Queen City Speedway - Charlotte, NC

I attended all 8 races @ Old Queen City Speedway in 1968. It was located beside the original path of West Blvd in Charlotte southeast of the original north-south runway 18 ( now 18R) @ Douglas Airport.

The track did draw complaints from the residents of Jackson Homes & Jackson Apartments along West Blvd when it began operations . Although there was much media hype about the noise complaints , they had nothing to do with the track's failure to survive. The race track actually was foreclosed on by it mortgage holders & the land was sold for commercial real estate development after several years.

The concrete stands are now part of the Independence High School football stadium east of Charlotte in Mint Hill, NC. The concession stand in the infield actually was turned into a massage parlor in the early to mid 70s. Finally after several lengthenings of the afore mentioned runway , West Blvd was rerouted directly through the center of the track's footprint to accommodate the changes for traffic.

Queen City could not survive against the direct scheduling of its main competitor, Fairgrounds Speedway , later Metrolina Speedway , off Hwy 21 & 115 in northwest Charlotte on Friday nights . It was deeper in debt than the builders expected from the beginning & the area could not support two competing dates so close to one another. It did run several Sunday events to try, but the season was winding down rapidly. The horse was literally"out of the barn".

In a side note, my friend , the "Great Racing Larry Wallace" a famed dirt track driver & Holman Camshaft grinder of renown won the last 3 races run @ the track in the famous "Stairs 4 Wheel Brake Shop" 57 Chevy. The very last race saw a classic two car duel between Larry & Ralph Earnhardt that had the fans on their feet for the entire 40 lap event. Larry won as Ralph's water pump was failing @ the end.

It was the best dirt track I ever saw. It died because of someone's misjudgment  .
