Old Concord / Rolled Over to Second Place
|
My dad took me and my brother to old Concord one Saturday night in the 60's. There also were some other relatives at the race with us. At this race were 2 Chevy's in the mid 60's that were twins. These cars were black with nice looking gold numbers. Larry Wallace was driving car number 22 and Dub Simpson was driving car number 21. These cars were perfect twins that looked good and were the class of the field. It was very hard to not look at these cars all night because of the looks and performance of them. Like always Penny was selling popcorn in the grandstands that night. I liked car number 21 Dub that night but a lot of fans were pulling for car 22 Larry Wallace. In the race Dub was in a wreck and his car rolled over. At my young age when a car rolled over that was the kiss of death for the car ending it's night. To my surprise Dub was able to get the car to run. Dub went back on the track and he had to start at the back of the field. Dub drove that car through field all the way to second place. Dub was looking at Larry Wallace next because he was leading the race but the checked flag would fall on the field ending the race. Those two black cars finished first and second but for Dub in car 21 that had to feel like a first place finish after rolling the car over. Artie Jones
Artie, I hate to correct you but I received an email from Dub Simpson making one minor correction to your story. He was driving #22 and Larry Wallace was in #61. Bob |
