Twin City Raceway - Loris, South Carolina
One of the tracks that me and my dad used to run was the "Twin City Raceway" in Loris, SC. It was built in 1964 and ran until about '68. The unique thing about it was its "heated" grandstands. The owners had enclosed the stands with roofing tin and place tobbacco barn burners underneath. The idea was to run all winter. They actually made it pretty far down into the fall.
This past fall I got to wondering if old Twin City still existed. I explained all of this to my friend, Ronnie Hockaday, of the NC Vintage Stock Car site, and we both started looking for it on Terraserver.com. Low and behold, there it was, or, at least, there it was on an aerial photo dated 1998! I had to know if it was still there. So, one Friday afternoon this past October, I drove over to the old site. A LOT had changed in 40 years and at first I could not really make it out. I Nexteled Ronnie, and got him to pull the aerial back up on his computer. With us conferring back and forth, I soon was standing on the old backstretch of Twin City Raceway! Kind of high-tech, huh? Anyway, I "burned up" a 27 pix roll of film from a disposable cameral and here are some of the shots.

Thanks for Bobby Williamson for the photos and memories of another raceway that has all but disappeared. Here is a link to an aerial view (courtesy of Bobby also).
